Exercise has multiple benefits. In fact, I would call it the best medicine that isn’t a medicine, that I can recommend to my patients. Both aerobic fitness and muscle mass are directly correlated with longevity. Both lifespan and quality of life are extended/improved the more fit and strong a person is.
At NMP, our comprehensive weight management program addresses the pillars of Lifestyle Medicine. These are diet/nutrition, sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, behavior modification, medication as needed, and, of course, exercise and physical activity. We are proud to announce that we have recently brought on board a highly trained exercise physiologist to help guide our patients toward improved aerobic fitness and strength. He has worked for many years in cardiac rehabilitation facilities, helping patients post heart attack or other cardiac event improve their fitness. Together, we are able to bring a virtual program to our patients that provides access to his talent and expertise. The physiologist will perform a fitness assessment to determine that patient’s ability to exercise. Dr. Berger will provide recommendations based on muscle mass distribution determined by body composition, as well as lab work and the overall health of the patient. He will then create an “exercise prescription” that will be difficult enough to challenge the patient, but not so extreme as to prevent participation or cause injury. Videos of how to perform these exercises will then uploaded to the patient’s app. The patient will be encouraged to perform these exercises at least 4 times weekly to increase the likelihood of positive effect. The physiologist and Dr. Berger will be available to adjust the exercise regimen as needed. This program, like many other components of our weight management program, will be covered by most health insurance plans.
