Why might a patient need a weight loss medication?
A proper lifestyle is always the foundation for maintenance of proper weight. However, obesity is considered to be a chronic disease. This means that similar to hypertension, if lifestyle changes are insufficient, then medication can be useful.
There are a variety of pharmaceuticals that are FDA approved for weight loss. This includes:
GLP1 class injectable medicines such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound
Oral options such as phentermine, Contrave, and Qsymia
Dr. Berger only prescribes FDA approved medications for treatment of obesity or any other medical condition.
At Northeast Medical Practice, Dr. Berger will evaluate each patient as an individual. If medication for weight loss is indicated, a thorough discussion of family and personal medical history, as well as the mechanism of action, side effects, and expected weight loss benefit will be conducted. If the patient and Dr. Berger agree to begin a weight loss medication, then it will be prescribed to your pharmacy. Health insurance coverage for these medications varies greatly and depends upon the patient’s particular health plan. Our Concierge Medicine Program membership fee does not cover the medications themselves. As many of these drugs are quite expensive, a prior authorization process is typically required in order for the medication to be approved. Dr. Berger will submit the appropriate forms and documentation to complete the authorization.
