History

The Great Neck peninsula was first settled by Native Americans who supported themselves through hunting, farming and fishing. They lived along the shorelines and established trading relationships with Dutch and English explorers.

Great Neck was incorporated in 1922 and is known as the “Old Village”. The writer F. Scott Fitzgerald once lived in Great Neck and used it and neighboring towns as the setting for his novel, “The Great Gatsby”.

The Great Neck Historical Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving and presenting the history and heritage of the Great Neck peninsula.
