Franklin Square is a hamlet located in Nassau County, New York, on the outskirts of mainly urban and suburban areas. It has a population of more than 30,000 inhabitants and is currently the seventh most populous in Nassau County.

History

The settlement of Franklin Square dates back to 1655 and belonged to Hempstead Township until 1899 when it became part of the newly created town of Hempstead. In 1907 it was incorporated as an independent village but was later dissolved in 1925 and returned to the Town of Hempstead. From then on, Franklin Square has functioned as an urban unincorporated area with complete administrative autonomy from any other surrounding town or city. The name comes from Benjamin Franklin whose statue is one of the main attractions in that area.
