Franklin Square is a hamlet located in Nassau County, New York, on the outskirts of mainly urban and suburban areas. It has a population of more than 30,000 inhabitants and is currently the seventh most populous in Nassau County.
History
The settlement of Franklin Square dates back to 1655 and belonged to Hempstead Township until 1899 when it became part of the newly created town of Hempstead. In 1907 it was incorporated as an independent village but was later dissolved in 1925 and returned to the Town of Hempstead. From then on, Franklin Square has functioned as an urban unincorporated area with complete administrative autonomy from any other surrounding town or city. The name comes from Benjamin Franklin whose statue is one of the main attractions in that area.
Population
According to the 2021 census, there are over 30,000 people living in Franklin Square making up 8.6% of Nassau’s estimated population at that time. It is a very diverse community of residents composed mostly by Whites, African Americans and Asians with sizable minorities hailing from Latin America and other regions around the world including Eastern Europe and India.

The educational system in Franklin Square consists primarily of two elementary schools (Latham and Washington) as well as John F Kennedy High School which serves students who live within its vicinity spanning all three townships nearby (Hempstead, Westbury and Uniondale).
