Hempstead is the largest township in New York State and serves as the center of Nassau County. The area has been inhabited since 1643, when a group of English settlers led by John Carman established the town.
History
Hempstead was formally established by European colonists in 1644, following a purchase of land from Native Americans who had lived there for hundreds of years before that. It underwent many transformations over the next centuries, including first being designated an early county seat in 1784, becoming part of Long Island with unification into one county district and then being established as a village in 1853. It was re-designated as a town in 1858 and at the same time became part of Queens County prior to joining Nassau County after its formation in 1898.
Population
As of 2020, Hempstead had an estimated population of 55,200 people making it one of the populated places on Long Island and one of three towns (together with North Hempstead and Oyster Bay) comprising what is known as “The Trident” – an area within Nassau that is surrounded on three sides by water. The majority (66%) are African American or Hispanic, but other ethnic groups are present too such as Italian-Americans (9%), Irish-Americans (7%) and Asian-Americans (5%).
Education
The town is served by well over twenty public school systems including Baldwin Senior High School, George Washington Elementary School, Valhalla Middle School and William S Dietrich Elementary School; several private schools can also be found here like Yehuda Montessori Academy and Temple Avodah Synagogue PreSchool & Kindergarten.
There are also two colleges located within the area – Hofstra University and Nassau Community College – providing higher education opportunities for those living nearby or interested students looking for options beyond schools closer to NYC itself.

One major health care provider in Hempstead is NuHealth System which includes both Nassau University Medical Center (a Level I Trauma Center serving southern Nassau County) and A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility offering long-term nursing care services to its patients 24 hours a day along with other healthcare establishments devoted to treating special needs individuals or situated close to residential areas like Franklin Hospital Medical Center East Meadow Branch Facility located on Front Street just west of Franklin Avenue South near Newbridge Road intersection .

Regular service buses link Freeport BART station with points further inland located between the County Line Road/Old Country Road junction and all the way up Washington Street from its starting point at Stewart Avenue.
